All Fossil Pokemon EXPLAINED!

Generation 1

- Omanyte & Omastar

- Omanyte and it's evolution, Omastar, are both water/rock type pokemon revived from a helix fossil in generation 1.

Omanyte is named after what it's based on: the ammonyte. Ammonytes are actually a very common fossil to find. Ammonytes lived before the dinosaurs in the Devonian period, 420-359 million years ago. They existed all the way up to the Cretaceous period - thats 343 million years! Since they existed for so long, there were many different variations. Ammonytes are also index fossils, which means that if you can figure out the type of ammonyte thats in the rock, you can also know the general age of the fossils around it. The reason that omastar has spikes is because there have been more ammonytes with spikes on their shells later on in the cretaceous, fitting the evolution.

- Kabuto & Kabutops

- Kabuto and it's evolution, Kabutops, are also water/rock pokemon. They were revived from a dome fossil in generation 1.

Kabuto is based on both the extinct trilobite and the modern day horshoe crab. The horshoe crab is actually considered a 'living fossil' because it has been around for so long. Like ammonytes, trilobites are a very common fossil. Kabuto's name comes from the japanese word for horshoe crab, kabutogani. Even if kabuto looks more like a horshoe crab, it's evolution, kabutops, is different. Kabutops looks more like a trilobites, with the armor plating and spikes. It might also be based on the carnivorous sea scorpions. Sea scorpions lived long before dinosaurs, and could get way over a foot long. The similarity is that sea scorpions had two long arms, like kabutops' scythes.

- Aerodactyl

- Aerodactyl is a rock/flying type pokemon. It is the only fossil pokemon to mega evolve, and it was revived from an amber fossil in gen 1. The reason it is revived from amber is because at the time pokemon gen 1 was being created Jurassic Park was really popular. If you don't know, in Jurassic Park, they take DNA out of amber to create dinosaurs. It's name comes from the latin word for wind, aero, and dactyl, from pterodactyl.
