Hummingbirds are a species of small birds native to both North and South America. There are more than 330 species of hummingbirds. They live mainly in South America, in rainforests near the equator. They have long beaks and colorful feathers, and their wings make a humming sound when flying, hence its name. This humming sound is made by air flowing through their feathers. They can drink nectar while flying, and can fly in any direction. They can see more colors that we humans can't even imagine, because they have an additional cone in their eyes.
They can move in any direction because they flap their wings in the shape of the number 8. Despite their size, they can fly up to 30 miles per hour. The ruby throated hummingbird has the fastest wing beat, being able to beat its wings at 200 times per second.
Their hearts beat at about 1,300 times per minute while flying, and 250 times per minute while resting. To put that in perspective, humans heart rates are at about 60-100 times per minute. They usually eat nectar, and some species eat insects and spiders. They consume about 5 times their body weight every day. They usually way about 2-24 grams, and are 2 inches long. Their eggs are about 0.4 inches long. Most species are not endangered.
