Shark Tagging

Acoustic tags can last for up to ten years and emit a ping sound that helps scientists identify the tag. They also transmit information on temperature and water depth. The tags are either surgically implanted or clamped to the dorsal fin. Then, the scientists plant acoustic listening stations on the seafloor. These listening stations pick up the ping sounds the tags make and transmit them to a buoy, or save the information to be manually retrieved.

Satellite tags are tags that transmit information to satellites in space, but also are attached to a fin.

A different type of tag is an identification tag, which usually has a number and instructions for whoever catches the animal.
