Unlike many other Cichlid Species, Rams are a very peaceful mid to bottom dwelling community fish. They can also come in any color of the rainbow. When breeding, Male-Female pairs will start to school together, and the female will lay eggs on a hard, flat surface like a rock and the male will fertilize them.

Both fish will take turns guarding the eggs and the newly hatched fry. Rams also have Sexual Dimorphism, which is when the two genders of an animal species look different.

First, male rams get 3.5 inches long, while females are an inch shorter, being only 2.5 inches. Males also have more pointed dorsal fins. Most rams prefer a higher temperature than other tropical fish, going up as much as 78-86 degrees. They require a minimum of 10 gallons, and although they are fine alone, most people would recommend having at least a pair. Here are some common Ram Cichlids:

Bolivian Rams are bigger and less colorful than German Rams but don't require the high temperature as much and are much easier to care for.
